A Slippery Slope Waiting to Happen

WARNING: Religious thoughts... if you take offense easily, back away quickly.

Apparently there is a new trend of Christ believing churches turning to the Church of Scientology in their teaching. Many of you remember CoS being in the news due to Tom Cruise's outrageous beliefs (i.e. postpartum depression isn't real, hiding his child, secluding Katie Holmes, being kicked out of Germany during a filming of some movie that no one will go see, etc).

Now this makes me wonder why churches would turn to such a cult (definition: a group in which the leader has an abnormal amount of control, many times leading to harm in its followers).

I would like to offer up the point that this "religion" (*cough* cult *cough*) was made up by a SCIENCE-FICTION WRITER (aka Hubbard). There's your first hint that this is not legitimate. Hello.... fiction writer!?!? And to be honest, it reads like science fiction (see below the dotted line for another blogger's take on the CoS)

Who would actually take him seriously?!? Beside of course crazy celebrities looking for some "religion" which allows all their craziness.
So, again, I come back to the point.... why would ANY church EVER turn to this cult for answers???

Some quotes from the CNN article (linked above):
"Now Kennedy [a Florida pastor] uses "The Way to Happiness" [by Hubbard] as a how-to supplement to his sermons. He believes it is easier to understand and clearer to follow than ancient Scriptures taken from the Bible."
Umm, "how-to-supplement"? Now come on mister, the Bible is still relevant. If your congregation is having issues understanding how to apply it there are more serious issues going on.... How about taking a step back and try explaining it yourself and giving them CHRISTIAN application... NOT applications from a cult, which is inherently against God.

When asked whether Scientology's values contradict the religion of Jesus Christ, Kennedy replies, "Sometimes yes. Sometimes no." But he says his congregation can relate to "The Way to Happiness."

"Sometimes yes. Sometimes no." Hmm, see if your congregation is already having issues understanding the Bible leaving it to them to make this distinction is probably not in their best interest, or yours... I'm pretty sure that the Devil also uses things like this to lead people away... Oh wait, check out the CoS goal:
Critic Rick Ross, a court-certified Scientology expert, sees something more sinister at work. He warned that mainstream acceptance makes it easier for the Scientologists to achieve their ultimate goal -- new recruits.

"Their hope is that through these programs, people will become more interested in L. Ron Hubbard, what else Mr. Hubbard had to offer, and this will lead them eventually to Scientology," Ross said.

Yeah, news flash.... the CoS is and never will be compatible with the word of God. Firstly because the Word of God is truth, not fiction. And secondly, the CoS is using every angle possible to pull people to them... and away from the true God (aka Satan again!)

If you are going to a Christian Church who starts using the teaching of the Chruch of Scientology get out of there quickly!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
These materials, which the Church of Scientology has long struggled to keep secret, were published online by a former member in 1995 and have been widely circulated in the mainstream media, ranging from The New York Times to last year's South Park episode. They assert that 75 million years ago, an evil galactic warlord named Xenu controlled seventy-six planets in this corner of the galaxy, each of which was severely overpopulated. To solve this problem, Xenu rounded up 13.5 trillion beings and then flew them to Earth, where they were dumped into volcanoes around the globe and vaporized with bombs. This scattered their radioactive souls, or thetans, until they were caught in electronic traps set up around the atmosphere and "implanted" with a number of false ideas -- including the concepts of God, Christ and organized religion. Scientologists later learn that many of these entities attached themselves to human beings, where they remain to this day, creating not just the root of all of our emotional and physical problems but the root of all problems of the modern world.

"Hubbard thought it was important to have a story about how things got going, similar to the way both Jews and Christians did in the early chapters of Genesis," says UCLA's Bartchy. "All religion lives from the sense either that something in life is terribly wrong or is profoundly missing. For the most part, Christianity has claimed that people have rebelled against God with the result that they are 'sinners' in need of restoration and that the world is a very unjust place in need of healing. What Hubbard seems to be saying is that human beings are really something else -- thetans trapped in bodies in the material world -- and that Scientology can both wake them up and save them from this bad situation"...

Rinder has fielded questions on Scientology's beliefs for years. When I ask him whether there is any validity to the Xenu story, he gets red-faced, almost going into a tirade. "It is not a story, it is an auditing level," he says, neither confirming nor denying that this theology exists. He says that OT material -- and specifically the material on OT III -- comprises "a small percent" of what Scientology is all about. But it is carefully guarded. Scientologists on the OT levels often carry their materials in locked briefcases and are told to store them in special secure locations in their homes. They are also strictly forbidden from discussing any facet of the materials, even with their families. "I'm not explaining it to you, and I could not explain it to you," says Rinder heatedly. "You don't have a hope of understanding it."
Can you handle this:In his 1983 autobiography, Over My Shoulder: Reflections on a Science Fiction Era, the sci-fi writer Lloyd Eshbach describes meeting Hubbard in the late 1940s. "I'd like to start a religion," Eshbach recalls Hubbard saying. "That's where the money is."

Contemplative

I blame it on the music.... but I've been quite reflective and I've come to a few conclusions:

1. I miss Thailand.

2. I miss these girls.

3. I miss Thai children.

4. I miss the kids at GIS.

5. Missions will always be part of my life, maybe not full time, but it will always be there.

Things making me happy

Currently a lot of things are going wrong:
1. my anatomy written grade
2. my steering wheel is shaking
3. i'm not liking the current unit... it makes me very uncomfortable

However, in the midst of this a friend introduced me to a very happy thing: Pandora. You see, my iTunes library was getting a little too much love. I needed something new, but I get so sick of accuradio and all there commercials (believe me, I still have much love for accuradio and all the good they brought me last year in Thailand). But Pandora.... oh my. You enter an artist and it makes your own radio station! So, as I sit studying about external genitalia I have the lovely melodies of corinne bailey rae, frank sinatra and sergio mendes to keep me company (along with other artists that pandora believes I will like based on my choices...). How awesome is that!?!?

So, Brian, if you happen to read this sometime in the future.... I owe you a lot.

And now back to my regularly scheduled love affair with gray and netter (aka anatomy text books)

"But I dont wanna"

This could possibly be the best phrase from childhood that can be carried over to everyday life. And it is currently the only thought in my head.

I have probably 4-5 loads of laundry and my cumulative histology exam in 2 weeks, but I have done nothing today. At all... not even showered or left the apartment (this could be due to the fact that I slept till 1 pm today, after not going to bed until 3... gotta love Halloween parties). But still, I just don't want to do anything. I want to sit back like I do every day during the summer and be a slug. Which I have successfully done until now (aka sleeping until 1 and watching 2 episodes of Heroes).

Yet, somehow I think I'm going to regret this decision, and already see how very childish this line of thought is. Hmm... what to do when there is no motivation.

Happy Halloween: Amazing revelations from the LSJ

So my friend had this article (When Zombies Attack) posted on facebook and I laughed so hard. Below are some of my favorite highlights:

"'People can feel confident, if zombies start invading, we'll know how to close the streets. We can get chainsaws too... If a swarm comes in on I-496 westbound, we'll block off the exits so they miss the city.'" -Lansing Police Lt. Bruce Ferguson.

"If the undead did attack, you'd have three options: come up with a detailed escape plan; cower in your basement and wait for help to come; or head out to the nearest store, buy a machete and .357 magnum, steal an SUV and start cracking craniums."

"'Use your head; cut off theirs.'" - Max Brooks

"Peter McShane Lewis, 33, of Lansing, has had a zombie attack plan in place for 18 years. His 18-member group, the Zombie Attack Coalition, (ZAC, for short) is spread around the Michigan and Ohio area and has both short-term and long-term attack plans." (seriously?!?! this really exists?!?!?)

These are just a few of the rather numerous quotes one can find in this article (which I am now highly recommending you all read). Just goes to show you why I don't want to live in Lansing.... 1. they actually report on potential zombie attacks, 2. nothing happens, forcing them to make up this ridiculousness.

Embryology ... got to love it.

This makes me never want to have kids. *

In related news: embryology/ histology exam on cardiovascular and gi development tomorrow... probably going to get rocked. But, at least I kinda have an idea of what's going on.

Also tomorrow: gross anatomy written and practical... a combined 5 hours of gross goodness. Bring it on.... but just don't hurt me too much (think of a big, securely adhered bandaid on your entire anterior thoracic and abdominal wall being torn off... that's a lot of hurt and kinda what I'm expecting: Should be fun). Hmm...

Wednesday night could not come fast enough.

* Please note that I probably will have kids, but a lot of pain medication will be involved... That just does not look comfortable for baby or mommy.

The Jackhammer and other Rants

For those of you who have been to my apartment, you might remember the "museum" (aka graffiti on the old train tracks) on the north side... This "museum of modern art" is now being turned into a walkway from the river to the farmers market, for which I'm very excited.

However, I have to give some advice to the people doing the job:

1. It is never okay to start your jackhammer at 7:30 am when the site is next to a 20+ floor apartment complex, or anywhere next to where people live.

2. It should be against the law to work through the weekend, as this is the time when most people in said apartment complex are home trying to relax.... your "dun-dun-dun" sound lasting for hours on end does not help this ... let alone make a conductive study environment.

3. It is not okay to work past 7 pm either (normal people stop working at 5, so should you)... people want to watch the news and catch up on life, which again is hard with your incessant noise.

More word to the "wise", and by this I mean the people running the city or visiting the city:

If you are coming in for a sports event down here...

1.DO NOT stop in the middle of the highway. Just because you don't know where you're going does not mean you can put everyone at risk.

2. Drive the speed limit... you may be here to play, but some of us actually live here and have to work... We don't have time to sit behind you while you a) figure out where the crap you are (hint: they're called street signs and they are in big letters) b) admire the scenery of the city

To the city government people:

1. What in your minds where you thinking by planning a marathon on the day of a NFL game?!?! You obviously are never down here because then you would realize that when there is a lot of extra traffic and people wanting to get home will try different routes. This is okay, unless you shut down all the major roads for a stupid race.

2. It is never okay to make your own turn lane in an oncoming traffic lane, even if you are an undercover cop... You obviously aren't in a rush as you aren't actually flashing your lights. Stop being obnoxious and follow the traffic laws that you are trying to enforce.

My Life if Now Complete

My life is now better.... I have found a Chipotle in the area. Granted it's like a 30 minute drive, but that's nothing new (*cough* undergrad *cough*). This just means more of a reason to leave the "comforts" of the city and experience the suburbs (*shudder*, jk).

And now back to my regularly scheduled program: STUDYING.

Countdown to exam: 3 days
Countdown to end of gross: 3 weeks, 3 days

New Toys

Meet my new stethoscope and sphygmomanometer (blood pressure). They make me happy... some reasons:
1. My stethoscope is purple.. plum to be exact, and is therefore very pretty
2. The sphygmomanometer is nefty -- instead of balance the gauge, release, and stethoscope doing blood pressures, the gauge and release are in one place.
3. The sphygmomanometer came with a really cute pediatric cuff
4. They're my very first "tools of the trade"

YAY! So happy!

The Gallery

I like photography... and thought that I would put some of my more recent photos up. Enjoy the fall!

I love the fall... last year my mom sent me leaves (I was in Thailand).... real ones just make me so happy!

I went to a wedding last weekend and had to stop and capture the beautiful corn husks. I know, I'm weird.

Stillness and Foliage, perfect.

My beautiful puppy... who I never get to see.

Oh Taylor Stereotypes... I LOVE it!

If any of you are interested I'm an English girl... haha. And no, I don't cry and yes, I can talk to boys. And funny enough, it's my Olson friends who are the married ones. Hmm, but the whole baking thing... it's SO true, the lounge always smelled yummy.

Ah Fall!

So it's finally getting cold... which makes me so happy. I love the hoodies and hot drinks associated with fall. Hmm, hot apple cider! This weather just makes me happy!

I have been a very bad stu
dent this week, and I have a feeling that it's going to catch up on me! I was okay on Monday, but it started going "downhill" on Tuesday. I went to one of the clinics that our school is connected to.... and had a wonderful time! It's amazing just learning how to take a history makes it so much easier! But going on a weekday meant that I didn't get home until about 8:45. And by that point I was just too tired to study.

Then Wednesday I found myself not studying either because I met up with my mom for dinner... not getting home until 8. Yesterday was the same story. I was volunteering at Children's hospital and didn't get home until 8:30. It was a great time, but between that and Grey's Anatomy I kinda screwed myself. Luckily this unit isn't as hard as head and neck.... my goal for the weekend is to get lots of studying in. Which might be hard tonight since I'm exhausted. Hmm. In other news, funny things happened this week....

Firstly, we'll started with "The Blower." This is a student in my class who, although a nice person and someone who will be a great doctor, might need to see a doctor. "The Blower" has been disturbing classmates since class started in August. At first we thought it was a cold, but after a few weeks we decided that it might be allergies (another theory... nervous habit).

Now, one of my classmates has taken to counting how many times per hour "The blower" blows their nose. At first I thought it was funny, but probably not the kindest (kind of like how some of my friends would cut certain traits in teachers and professors... but now a little mean since almost everyone but the blower knows about this hourly activity).

However, the other day it got REALLY bad. Like bad to the point that the lecturer was being distracted. So bad that I found myself asking my fellow classmate how many he counted. Ready? 101 times in 2 hours! How is this even physically possible?!?! How can "The Blower" live like this?

It got to the point that many of us didn't go to a few lectures because it was so distracting! I really wish the blower would go get some help... not just for our sake, but for the sake of their very red nose.

Another funny occurrence, although probably not very professional on our parts happened today. We had a new lecturer today. Now, I usually go to lectures. There was one professor I left during break (to stream later at 2x, thus making the speed normal speed; as karma would have it, he ended up being the new lab prof... which I also left at break, only to find a new one the next day ... too bad you can't stream lab).

I have also started streaming another prof because he is kind of hard to understand and adds stuff to lecture that I want to get (I stream him at normal speed and listen to a few places numerous times to get it all; the picture is representative of the gloriousness of streaming lectures in the comfort of my own home).

Today was bad though! I try and give new lecturers benefit of the doubt. But let's just say, within 2 minutes the first person slipped out the back doors. Within the first 5 minutes I found myself grabbing my stuff, slowly getting up, and quietly exiting out the back. I felt bad, but he was talking REALLY REALLY slow and reading his notes cold. It was really bad.

I wanted to stay for the next lecture, who I knew was good (clinical correlations from a guy who made us laugh a lot the last time), so I set up my stuff at one of the tables behind the lecture hall. Within the next 10 minutes at least 15 people left lab, if not more. It was really funny to see everyone walk out. I felt bad for the guy, but it was just not good. Hmm.

The next guy was of course on point and hilarious. Funny comments, including one about us being really good sighing 40 times in his lecture (4000 in the last one). He knew because I saw him go into the projection both and talk to our class director, who himself was laughing about the bad lecture. Let's just say that I won't be going to his lecture on Monday.
