"These are not monuments, but footprints. A monument only says, 'At least I made it this far,' while a footprint says, 'This is where I was when I moved again.'" -William Faulkner
That is from one of the lectures on my test tomorrow... but I just wanted to share it cause the macrophages look so happy... maybe it's all the fat they're eating...
On that note, quotes from my clinical medicine notes for tomorrow's other test (on fat): -"Obesity is a major health problem" -"Obesity is treatable" -Obesity is "a weapon of mass public health destruction" -"Fat people may die happy, but they die earlier."

Bill: "I came out of the womb acting out paraphilias, I know all of this already. I rubbed myself all over that doc- lil frotteurism; showed them my baby weiner- exhibitionism; peeked at them from my crib- voyeurism; they dressed me in a girl nighty cause they thought i was one- transvestism, and i had a little ED as a baby too!"
Julie: (speaking about medical school) "Is it rape if I pay for it?" Katie: "No, I think that's prostitution?"
Julie: "I often like to throw up and then steal things." (on the relation between kleptomania and bulimia)
I LOVE YOU SO MUCH AND WISH I COULD GIVE YOU THE BIGGEST HUG IN THE WORLD FOR YOUR BIRTHDAY (but I'm stuck in the D studying).
YOU ARE ONE OF THE MOST (if not the most) IMPORTANT PEOPLE IN MY LIFE!!!! YOU ARE AMAZING AND I LOVE YOU MORE THAN WORDS CAN SAY!!!!! I hope you have a WONDERFUL birthday!!!!!!! P.S. This is the only picture I have of you on this computer, please don't be mad... I think you look absolutely beautiful in this picture anyways.
(Why this picture? Information overload... there's too much, and I really cannot handle it)
Yesterday I started studying at 9 am. Around 6pm my eyes were going crazy and so was my head. So, I decided to have some distractions on in the background (the music wasn't enough -- I needed something to distract my eyes as well) -- thus began Katie's catch up on weekly TV shows. For those of you who don't know me (or maybe you all don't know) -- I'm a TV junkie.
There were a few things that I loved: 1) Grays, need I say more and 2) ALL the psych on Private Practice kind of helped me review for my test on Tuesday. However, there was one thing that really stuck with me throughout the rest of the night and into today... during Dirty Sexy Money (yes, I'm ashamed -- but again, I needed distraction) there was a lot of music by The Weepies.
Now, I do not know how I've missed listening to this band. I've heard of them, and heard a few of their songs before. But the music has somehow escaped my iTunes library... and still is (I really cannot allow myself to start buying music on iTunes... it's bad cause once I start I cannot stop).
So, in order to remedy the situation of not having any of The Weepies in my iTunes I turned to my trust friend: PANDORA. I typed in "weepies" and have been enjoying AMAZING music since last night... we're talking all day my friends.
During this I realized something else... Joshua Radin is AMAZING and I might be falling in love with him, I mean, erm... his CD "We Were Here". It's taken every once of strength not to buy this CD currently... or other songs of his.
And now back to studying --- my 2 test on Tuesday = 550 pages of information; my 2 tests on Friday = 900 pages of information. Sick....
Ever since I can remember thinking about going into medicine I've been thinking pediatrics. Well, a few things have began to chip away at this foundation this year:
1. My friend told me she does not think I actually like kids. When I told this to my mom, she might have agreed. Thanks for the votes there. But I think I realized they might be a little right... this got me thinking about other interest.... before wanting to do pediatric oncology I was thinking pediatric surgery. So maybe surg?
2. I took a "What type of medicine should you do" type test, which according to some is pretty right. Well, the top 3 were all different fields of surgery. Hmmm, I guess I should have done better in anatomy lab.
I know that I have time, and still have 3rd year to sort it all, but it's kind of strange thinking that maybe peds might not be right... I mean I always knew I didn't want to do general peds (some speciality), but did that really just mean peds wasn't for me?
So, I have to admit that I watch Heroes. It started when I was living in Thailand -- some of my students were watching it online and they convinced me to give it a try. I've been hooked ever since. Guilty addiction (along with a long list of other shows I watch while studying).
Anyways, so a few weeks ago Mohinder (a biologist/geneticist, see above pic) injected himself with a solution containing stress hormones (from what I could gather) that came from Mia during one of her episodes. At first everything was fine and dandy -- but then he had super human strength.
Major Side Effect: Peeling Nasty Skin.
This past week in pathobiology we've been studying immunopathology. During class our professor showed us this picture, and all I could think of was the peeling nasty skin from heroes:
What is it? Pemphigus Vulgaris, "an autoimmune blistering disorder resulting from the loss of integrity of normal intercellular attachments within the epidermis and mucosal epithelium... Primary lesions are superficial vesicles and bullae that rupture easily, leaving shallow erosions covered with dried serum and crust." (Robbins and Contran, Pathological Basis of Disease).
Issues around it being the same thing as on Heroes: 1. It generally affects pressure points on skin, scalp, face, axilla, groin, trunk 2. It's a type II hypersensitivity reaction, involving autoantibodies binding to cell surface/ tissue antigens. While this could be possible, it would mean that the injection contained the antibodies to Mohinder's desmosomes -- which is only possible if Mia had has previous immune exposure. I'm sure there are others, but I'm stopping there.
Thoughts from the gallery??
And yes, I really did just post this... I'm a nerd.
For those of you who don't know, my name is Kate... not Kathleen or one of the Kathrine variations. Just Kate.
During middle school we had to do some assignment having to do with our names, and I remember asking my mom, "Why just Kate?"
She replied, "I wanted you to have a strong name. And Kate Hepburn always reminded me of strength." (or something along those lines). At which point I pointed out she was a Katharine.
But new evidence shows there's more to it than just that. Thanks to Angela, I was able to track my name. If you look carefully, during the year I was born, most of the "just-Kates" were being born in New England. Not so many in the Midwest. Clearly, mom was trying to reach back to her childhood roots.
Welcome to October in Michigan. Sick. High today of 50. Again, sick. However, it does give me even more reason to wear sweats and drink peppermint tea. Hmm...
Go YEARBOOKYOURSELF.... By uploading a photo you can check out how ridiculous you'd look in yearbook shots from the 1950s to 2000. Go forth and play...
I have come to the conclusion that 2nd year is incompatible with life. Or at least, I still to be incompatible with life this year.
To put this in better perspective, here was last weeks class schedule:
We had class almost every day from 9-5. After that I studied from 5:30-12:30ish every night. When does this leave room to deal with things happening in real life? It doesn't, which means that I've been getting farther and farther behind this week.
In fact, in order to try and stay on top of things I bit I started streaming lectures at 2x instead of going to class. I would stream the 7 hours of lectures in 3 1/2 hours and spend the rest of the day trying to catch up.
I caught up on streaming yesterday, however, my list of 1st time review is out of control. Here's the running sticky from my computer: I really don't know when I'm actually supposed to learn any of this stuff. Cause going through it once is not enough, but at the rate they're throwing stuff it might be the only chance I get.
It's been so stressful lately that I had a panic attack on Thursday night driving home (mind you I've never had panic attacks before). No joke, hyperventilating and everything. I almost stopped driving on the highway but talked myself down a bit.
I really don't know how I'm going to make it through this block of material and am praying that it will be Thanksgiving already so I can have a break.
On that note... Pharm is calling me... although they're speaking a different language that I do not understand at all.
Meet "Diagnostic Kit". Diagnostic Kit is my new friend. Yes, that is right... I now feel even more like a fake doctor. This year we start PD (physical diagnosis) and with that comes the requirement to buy a diagnostic kit. The picture above is what I have... We have the handy dandy lithium powered handle, the otoscope (to look in ears, noses, and mouths) and the coaxial ophthalmoscope head to look in eyes (one setting even has a target). Can we say play time!? Along with this little kit there are 2 tuning forks (that are just incredibly fun to make vibrate), a pen light, a tape measure, and a reflex hammer (watch out for your knees and arms my friends). YAY! The only bad thing about this new toy is the price.... yikes.
And another soon to be new toy: That's right... I'm buying the new MacBook... most likely this afternoon. Why? A few reasons. Firstly, I LOVE my current Mac and really feel like I'm betraying it, but I think its time to upgrade. Let me explain the dilemna of the last month.
1.) Trying to upgrade to Leopard. Leopard is the new operating system, and I've been meaning to upgrade for awhile. However, upon consulting a friend I realized that I was almost maxing out my current memory. In order to upgrade I needed to back up everything on an external hard drive (which I had to buy) and then do a clean install. This isn't such a big issue cause I've been meaning to get an external hard drive for awhile. To put the memory issue in perspective, by iPhone has 100 MORE GBs than my computer. How sad is that?! iPhone= 160GB, Mackey = 60 GB. Can we say, wow?! And it's only like 2 1/2 years old... that's how much more awesome the Macs have gotten in the last few years. The current MacBooks have 160 and 250G minimums.
2.) Starting to run parallels. There's only one real reason that I need to run parallel (allows you to run windows on your Mac), and that's SCHOOL. Kinda a big deal. You see, our school video streams all of our lectures, however, they put them in windows media player. This isn't that huge of a problem, cause there's a program called Flip4Mac that allows you to run them through quicktime. The problem arises from the fact that you have to completely download a lecture (taking 30 minutes to an hour) before you can stream it at anything other than 1x (I've been perferring 2x with recent lecturers). Problems with running parallels began when I realized I only had a 1 GHz processor, and you need 2 to run parallels.
Upgrades took place and it was working fine until yesterday when Mackey decided that it didn't like parallels anymore. Basically, even after moving almost ALL my files over to my external hard drive, making just a few new ones completely finished off the remaining space in my very small memory. I know only have 4 documents + music on my computer but cannot use parallels. BOOO. This happened yesterday afternoon.
Upon my friend telling me it was time to buy a new computer (something I almost did a few weeks ago), I told her I was going to limp Mackey along until the new MacBooks came out. Low and behold... by the time I got home the new ones had been released! Divine intervention!?! Maybe.
Anyways, this afternoon I'm making another trip to the Apple store to get my new Mac! (I went this morning, but they hadn't gotten their shipment yet). And hopefully a new printer with it, which I'm in desparate need of!
Who can say EXCITED for new toys!??!?
Hopefully I can get Uncle Sam to increase my loans to help cover part of it.... Hmm. Because between a new computer and my diagnostic kit my bank account might start screaming at me.
So my friend Angela is having a poll to determine/feel out what she should do for vocal piece in one of her classes. But at the bottom she linked this video of a song one of her classmates is doing. I found it absolutely amazing -- the vocalist is great, but I love the song.
Umm... my favorite part is at the end... Absolutely fabulous!
The good news: MICRO IS DONE! Yes, that is right, down with a class! Hallelujah! The bad news: We picked up our notes for the next block of classes, got home and realized that it wasn't the course, but the unit. We're talking over 900 pages of notes in the next month! We've already covered 60 pages in Psych and another 50 in Pharm in 2 days. Whose excited?!
Have I mentioned: only masochists go to med school?
I've been making seasonal mixes for the past few years (starting in summer of my senior year at college)... they're completely random but I like them. That being said, here's "When I Grow Up - Fall 2k08": What's on your playlist right now?
p.s. I've been SO pleasantly surprised by the free songs on iTunes lately.
